Summer Drinks

Summer Drinks

So the sun may not currently be shining but that gives us time to prepare for delicious warm weather drinkies. When the heat returns, we’ll be ready! We’ve included a well rounded selection of drinks and even some cocktails, with the hope that if you’ve not been abroad for a while, sipping one of these in the garden with your feet in a paddling pool will go some way to perking up the summer holidays.

We’ve had a few people ask for ready-made Sangria recently, which unfortunately we don’t stock BUT it’s super simple to make and you can then match your base wine to your own taste. You’ll need the following:

  • Sturdy, flavourful fruit that compliments your wine choice e.g. oranges, apples, blueberries, strawberries, peaches, blackberries, pineapple, pears, cherries
  • A 750ml bottle of red wine
  • 200ml orange juice
  • 100ml brandy
  • 30g granulated sugar (can be substituted with honey or agave)
  • Fizzy water (or prosecco if you’re feeling fancy)

Mix together the wine, juice, brandy and sugar before adding in the fruit. Refrigerate for a minimum of two hours and top up with fizzy water/prosecco when you’re ready to pour!

Note: The longer you leave in the fridge, the better it will taste. Want to spice it up even more? Try adding a drop of triple sec, gran marnier or Cointreau. Don’t forget to add ice to your glass!

Here are some wines we recommend:

  • El Coto Rioja Crianza | £12.95 | strawberry & vanilla
  • Kaiken Malbec Clasico | £9.95 | wildflower & blackberry
  • Domino do Bibei ‘Lalama’ Red Ribeira Sacra | £25.95 | raspberries, redcurrants & cherries
  • Black Queen Sparkling Shiraz | £26.95 | satsuma, plum & black cherry

There are so many choices and it really depends on taste, so here are a couple that may not have crossed your mind.

Sour beer, championed by local legends Wild Weather Ales can be tart, mouth puckering or sweet but most of all insanely refreshing! It’s also fantastic paired with a full flavoured, creamy cheese or cheese cake, to cleanse your palate between each mouthful. If you’re new to the sour game, we’d recommend these:

Saison or farmhouse ale originates from Belgium and was traditionally a low alcohol ale produced by local farmhouses to quench the thirst of farm workers as it was safer than drinking the water! Now it has evolved into a thirst-quenching, fruity brew for the masses with a high carbonation and a dry spiciness. Try these out for size:

Try the Isle Of Wights ‘Mermaid’ Salt Vodka in a classic Bloody Mary. Add ice to a jug, pour in 100ml vodka, 500ml tomato juice and 1 tbsp lemon juice. Shake in Worcestershire sauce & smoked tobacco, a pinch of celery salt and pepper. Stir. Pour into glasses with lemon wedges and celery sticks.

Ron Matusalem Gran Reserva Dark Rum will blow your mind in a dark and stormy punch. Mix pineapple, 100ml dark rum, the juice of two limes and a pinch each of nutmeg, cinnamon and ginger to a jug. Crush (with the end of a rolling pin or similar) to release some pineapple juice. Fill two glasses with ice and fill with the concoction, top up with ginger beer and mix gently.

Opt for a classic gin (we have over 100 in the shop and online) and tonic as let’s face it, it’s synonymous with summer. Or go crazy and try a pink grapefruit fizz using any of our citrus based gins. Add one part gin to one part pink grapefruit juice with half part of syrup and prosecco (or dry sparkling wine) to top. Garnish with pink grapefruit.
